The Science of Goal Setting & Vision Boards
Goal setting isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s backed by science, and it works. Studies show that people who set clear, specific goals are up to 10 times more likely to achieve them. Pair this with a vision board, and you have a proven formula to turn your dreams into reality.
Neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart explains that vision boards can rewire your brain to help create behavioural change. She states, "Looking at images on a vision board primes the brain to grasp opportunities that may otherwise have gone unnoticed."
Here’s Why They Work
The Brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS):Your RAS acts as a filter, helping your brain focus on what matters most. When you create a vision board, you prime your RAS to notice opportunities, ideas, and resources aligned with your goals.
Visualisation Activates Motivation: Seeing your goals daily triggers the same brain areas as actually achieving them. This creates a mental blueprint that keeps you motivated and focused.
Accountability Through Action: Writing down your goals engages the left brain (logic), while visualising activates the right brain (creativity). Together, they create a balanced approach to achieving success.
My Goal-Setting & Vision Board Ritual
At the beginning of every year, I get crystal clear on the goals I want to achieve. I write them down, print them out, and place them behind my laptop on the wall where I can see them daily.
I usually have a mix of goals for my business, personal life, relationships, self-love, and wellbeing. It’s all about what feels right for you.
I then create a vision board to support these goals. I spend a few hours with a stack of magazines, letting my intuition (or the universe!) guide me toward the images and words that align with my goals. I absolutely love this process! This year, I’m doing it with some friends, which makes it even more special.
Placement matters! Put your vision board somewhere you’ll see it regularly. This is key to priming your RAS to notice opportunities and stay focused on your goals.
Why It’s Powerful
Goal setting gives your dreams structure, while a vision board brings them to life. Together, they:
Bring clarity to your intentions.
Boost motivation and focus.
Keep your dreams front and center, even when life gets busy.
Pro Tip
Start small. Create a vision board that resonates with your heart and aligns with your values. Write down actionable steps for each goal and revisit them regularly. Consistency is key!
What’s on your vision board for 2025? Let me know—I’d love to cheer you on!
